Elemental semiconductor and Compound semiconductor
Elemental semiconductors
Elemental semiconductor is made of a single element. Silicon and germanium are elemental semiconductors.
Semiconductor element of fourth group, that is doped with pentavalent or trivalent impurities, in order to get n-type semiconductors, are called elemental semiconductors.
Compound semiconductors:
Semiconductors, which are formed by combining fifth and third group or sixth and second group are called compound semiconductors.
Compound semiconductors are produced from two or more elements. Examples : GaAs, GaP, InAs, GaN, InSb, SiC.
Difference between elemental and compound semiconductors

1. elemental semiconductors are those semiconductors which are composed of single species of atoms. |
1. compound semiconductors are those semiconductors that combine two or more elements |
2. Elemental semiconductors are made from single element and belong to IV group and VI group elements. |
2. compound semiconductors usually combine Group III and V elements and Group II and VI elements. |
3. Elemental semiconductors are used for low-frequency devices. |
3. compound semiconductors are used for high-frequency devices and optical devices. |
4. Elemental semiconductors are used for low performance device. |
4. compound semiconductors are ultra-high performance with sensing and other capabilities. |
5. Elemental Semiconductors are known as indirect band gap semiconductor |
5.Compound Semiconductors are known as direct band gap semiconductor |
6. elemental semiconductors itself act as a semiconductor by origin like silicon, germanium etc. |
6. compound semiconductor are formed artificially by mixing two different types of elements
|
7. Elemental Semiconductors are used in diodes, transistor, rectifiers, solar cells etc. |
7. Compound semiconductors are used in power amplifiers, smartphones, wireless devices, DVDs,Blu-rays, LEDs, solar batteries, solar cells and gyro stabilisers in satellites. |
8. elemental semiconductor cannot be used to make visible LEDs
